Q&A: Asking Siri — the Right Way

"But you can look within Siri for answers as well. The next time you hold down the iPad’s Home button to summon the assistant, tap the small “i” in the box above the microphone icon. Siri pops up a list of the functions it can perform, as well as examples of how to ask for things".

My day with Siri

"If you tell Siri "Do not disturb," it understands that you’re alluding to the new feature in iOS 6 to mute alerts and notifications, but it can’t enable that feature for you: Instead, it will helpfully provide a link to that setting".

CNET review of new SIRI features

"Siri can now make reservations, give you movie info, keep you up-to-date on sports, launch apps, and post to Twitter and Facebook on your behalf. Let's start by taking a look at the process to make a reservation using Siri."

IOS5

I've been an iPhone fan since the beginning. I bought the original iPhone 2, on to the 3GS, then the 4 and now the 4S. I upgraded if I saw something attractive in the upgrade.

Since I have large fingers text typing was cumbersome! Setting reminders required a manual entry in one part of the iPhone, putting in calendar information took me to another section, making phone calls another section again, sending and receiving mail....another section. All good stuff but seemed like more work than needed.

The answer for me............SIRI! A one location voice command for all these features and more.

I travelled through the web looking for SIRI and there was so much interesting stuff out there I decided to set up a log and share it with you.

Let's start with simple voice commands: (it's pretty smart so try variations)

the most basic first.....how to turn SIRI on.....press and hold the HOME button. Once the microphone
activates, release. For further use of SIRI just tap microphone to activate. If SIRI isn't working make
sure it's turned on...go to settings, general, SIRI and make sure it's on. Location services should also
be enabled so when you ask it questions about your area it knows where you are (settings/location services).
If you get the 'can't connect to the network' try turning SIRI off, wait a couple of seconds, then turn it back
on again, or follow these same steps turning the iPhone off as well. While using SIRI you can either hold
the phone in a microphone position or put it to your ear.
  • give me
  • send text
  • review text before sending
  • send email
  • call
  • set meeting
  • change meeting (or move meeting)
  • set alarm
  • directions
  • weather
  • find hotels, etc (state specific amenities)
  • simple math ( asked it what is 100 x 200)
  • reminders
  • play (tell it a song from your iTunes)
  • search the web
  • microphone also available at text message screen (no command capability that I can tell so far)
  • text status on FB
  • text on Twitter
  • create
  • check time, check meetings, etc.
Now when they add "take a picture" to SIRI I'll really be thrilled!

Apple lists many useful functions on their site

here's a good one from that link

How does Siri learn about my key relationships?

Siri also helps you by learning about the key people in your life. The first time you ask Siri to call your sister, it will ask you who your sister is. That information is stored in Contacts along with other relationship information like “mom,” “husband,” and “grandma.”"

and here's another one

Is Siri accessible to blind and visually impaired users?

Yes. VoiceOver, the screen reader built into iOS, can speak any text that’s displayed in responses from Siri. You can navigate through the responses and have each one read to you. This includes the days of a weather forecast, the body of an email, the details of an answer from Wolfram|Alpha, and more."

Another feature I like is "input interpretation"  Doesn't get them all but if you're in a hurry like I was today
subtracting what I owed from the total on a bill....SIRI did the job!

Ask SIRI

how much is 12x12
how many eggs in a dozen
how many kilobytes in a megabyte
how many letters in an alphabet
add 4 + 4
how many pennies in $7

Actually Siri's very entertaining. Try out different comments/questions/suggestions just to amuse
yourself and you'll find out how amusing Siri can be!  Siri does a great search job, really cuts down
the search time. Much easier to ask Siri to find something than to go to one of the search engines and type
it in...real time saver.

fun questions/tasks: (some of this is great/fun stuff!)

do you know the way to San Jose

play Peter Paul and Mary (my only album on iTunes) it brings up a random one and plays it.....stop playing.....it does (you can request specific song.....play blowin in the wind

Creating a shopping list with Reminders and Siri

Here’s a Workaround for Dictating Complex Names to Siri

SIRI does a great job understanding your question (well I come from Boston so it's not hearing me when I ask it about Harvard but if I add University to it it gets what I'm saying. Same with car....I had to mimic another accent to get SIRI to accept car...but those are known Boston accent twists. For the rest of the vocabulary it does a very
good job picking up what you are saying and if required doing a web search with excellent results. Often it's in the wording...if I say call Dominoes in (name a city) it will zero in on that one or # in the city and give you the selection....if you ask it to call the post office in that city it will zero in on the Post Offices in that city and give you the selection

My experiments:

CONTACTS

GIVE ME
   SHOW ME   FIND ME  GET
I put Amazon in my contacts (Amazon as contact name and www.amazon.com as home page. Then I said to SIRI
'give me Amazon' and it brings up contact and I tap site

I put my nephews Clam Manson YouTube channel in my contacts and his url: www.youtube.com/user/primusclambake with Clam Manson as the contact name. Then I said to SIRI
'give me Clam Manson' and it brings up contact and I tap site. Actually I just set up a 2nd contact list
for my frequently visited websites after reading  this article. What was also interesting is that
when I created the contact list on the Mac it automatically updated on the iPhone which is nothing less
than awesome.
